BEXTRA ( Valdecoxib ) is a once-daily prescription medicine that provides 24-hour relief of osteoarthritis joint pain. BEXTRA works by targeting the COX-2 enzyme, which plays a key role in arthritis pain and inflammation. BEXTRA was the first COX-2–specific inhibitor approved for treating the pain, inflammation, and stiffness that accompanies osteoarthritis and adult rheumatoid arthritis.
BEXTRA also helps relieve acute pain (such as pain from strains and sprains, or pain after surgery) in adults, as well as primary dysmenorrhea (painful menstrual cramping).
Bextra is in the same class of drugs as Vioxx and Celebrex. Merck the makers of Vioxx have recently recalled the Vioxx due to serious and often fatal side effects. Since Bextra is in the same drug class as Vioxx and Celebrex experts believe that Bextra shares the same harmful side effects of Vioxx. Experts believe that since Vioxx was approved by the FDA that it has been responsible for over 27,000 deaths by either heart attack or stroke.
